Dmitri's Drive

Love the rhythmic propulsion of Dmitri Shostakovich coupled with native colors, a polymodal sense of melody, and epic inventive vision, qualities shared by Indian ragas. Rajasthani Spring reveals some of this binary influence.

Sitting front row center at Tanglewood for Leonard Bernstein conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the Shostakovich Fifth on a sunny summer day remains a hightlight of my musical life. Bernstein took the stage in an elegant white coat shining like a Hindu god.
